Where to Find Vegan Banh Mi in Saigon, Ward by Ward

A neighbourhood guide to vegan banh mi in Ho Chi Minh City: 24/7 vegan shops, pagoda-area vegetarian stalls, late-night options and how to plan your route.

Two travellers with backpacks sharing a vegan Vietnamese baguette sandwich split lengthwise on low plastic stools on a leafy Saigon sidewalk, scooters blurred behind, wide street-level shot, late-afternoon light.

Short answer: In Ho Chi Minh City, the most dependable vegan banh mi comes from places that never cook meat. The Bánh Mì XANH chain runs five fully vegan shops open 24/7 around Bến Thành, Đa Kao, the Bùi Viện backpacker area and the former District 7. Beyond that, look for vegetarian restaurants (quán chay) near pagodas, which sell tofu and mushroom banh mi in the morning, and use delivery apps to fill the gaps.

How Saigon's map changed in 2025

If your guidebook talks about District 1 or District 3, it is now slightly out of date. Since 1 July 2025, Ho Chi Minh City has merged with Bình Dương and Bà Rịa–Vũng Tàu provinces, the old urban districts were abolished, and the city is organised into redrawn wards (phường). Locals still say "Quận 1" in conversation and taxi drivers understand it, but addresses on receipts and maps increasingly use the new ward names.

In this guide we give the new ward with the former district in brackets, for example Bến Thành ward (former District 1). When you type an address into a ride-hailing app, the street number and street name are what matter; the ward is mostly for orientation. Keep that in mind if an older blog post seems to contradict a newer map.

Neighbourhood by neighbourhood

The fully vegan shops cluster in the old centre, with one outpost in the south. Here is what each area offers.

The central cluster: Bến Thành and around

The old core of the city around Bến Thành Market is where most first-time visitors stay, and it is also where vegan banh mi is easiest to find. Bánh Mì XANH has two shops in Bến Thành ward: one at 38 Lê Thị Riêng, a short walk from the market, and a small grab-and-go counter at 2B Trần Hưng Đạo. Both are open around the clock, including Sundays and the Tết holiday, which is unusual for the city centre.

The market area itself is busy with banh mi carts, but almost all of them are meat-focused, with pâté and cold cuts as the main event. You can sometimes get a vegetable-only version, but cross-contact is a given. If you want a sandwich you do not need to question, walking five or ten minutes to a fully vegan shop is the simpler choice. Around lunchtime, office workers queue at every food outlet in the area, so mid-morning or mid-afternoon is calmer.

Đa Kao and the north of the old centre

Đa Kao is a quieter, more residential part of the former District 1, with leafy streets, cafés and the area around the Tân Định church just beyond it. Bánh Mì XANH's shop at 15B Nguyễn Thị Minh Khai, in Sài Gòn ward, sits near Đa Kao and works well if you are visiting the nearby Jade Emperor Pagoda, a Taoist temple many visitors combine with a walk through the neighbourhood.

Pagoda areas across the city are a good hunting ground for vegetarian food in general. Small quán chay often open early for worshippers and sell rice dishes, noodle soups and sometimes banh mi with mock meats. Egg can appear in these places, so the phrase thuần chay (strictly vegan) is still useful. Our phrase guide in this category covers exactly what to say.

The backpacker area by Bùi Viện

Bùi Viện and Đề Thám streets form the city's backpacker quarter, now in Cầu Ông Lãnh ward (former District 1). It is loud after dark, full of hostels and bars, and it has a long tradition of international food. Bánh Mì XANH's shop at 148B Đề Thám is right in the middle of it, which matters most at 2 a.m. when almost everything else serving food is a grill with meat on it.

This is also the neighbourhood where you are most likely to hear "vegan" understood in English. Several restaurants in the area advertise vegetarian or vegan dishes for travellers. Standards vary, so if you are strict, ask how the bread is spread and whether fish sauce goes into the dressing. A shop where the entire menu is plant-based removes that conversation altogether.

The south: former District 7 and Phú Mỹ Hưng

The former District 7 is home to a large residential community, including many expatriate families, and is a long ride from the old centre. Bánh Mì XANH's fifth shop is at 210 Bùi Văn Ba in Tân Thuận ward, inside the Chay 365 vegetarian restaurant, which is handy if you are already heading to the south of the city. Like the others, it is open 24/7.

If you live in this part of the city, ordering for delivery is often more practical than crossing town. If you get hooked and want to rebuild the flavours in your own kitchen later, our sauces and spreads section covers the vegan mayo and chili sauce. The chain takes orders on its website and the shop calls back to confirm; general delivery apps also list vegetarian shops in the area.

Planning a day around vegan banh mi

A sandwich is portable, which makes it the ideal anchor for a sightseeing day. Here is an example route for a first day in the city centre, built around shops that are always open, so the timing is flexible.

  1. Around 7:00. Start early to beat the heat. Pick up a sandwich and a black coffee near Bến Thành Market and eat on a bench before the market gets crowded.
  2. Around 9:00. Walk north towards the former District 1 landmarks and on to Đa Kao. Mornings are the best time for pagodas, when worshippers are present and the light is soft.
  3. Around 13:00. Retreat from the midday sun for a proper lunch at a vegetarian restaurant, or take a ride to the former District 7 for a full Chay 365 meal.
  4. Evening. Explore Bùi Viện after dark and grab a late sandwich on Đề Thám before heading back to your hotel.

Ho Chi Minh City is hot all year, with daytime temperatures usually in the low to mid 30s °C (around 90 °F), and the rainy season brings short, heavy afternoon showers from roughly May to November. A banh mi stays crisp for about twenty minutes in that humidity, so eat it soon after buying.

Vegetarian restaurants, markets and apps

Outside the dedicated shops, there are three other reliable ways to find a vegan banh mi in the city:

  • Vegetarian restaurants near pagodas. Many quán chay sell breakfast banh mi with tofu, mushrooms or mock meat. On the first and fifteenth days of the lunar month, more vendors switch to vegetarian food and some regular carts add a meat-free option.
  • Markets. Fresh markets sell tofu, mock meats and pickles, and occasionally a vendor assembles vegetarian sandwiches. This is hit and miss, and better for buying ingredients than for a ready meal.
  • Delivery and directory apps. Searching "bánh mì chay" or "thuần chay" in GrabFood or ShopeeFood shows nearby options with photos. HappyCow lists vegan and vegetarian restaurants with recent reviews from travellers.

If you are travelling further than Saigon, our sister site vietbanhmi.com covers eating across Vietnam more broadly, while this category stays focused on the sandwich itself. And when you get home, our guide to plant-based fillings shows how to cook the tofu and mushrooms you tasted here.

What it costs

Street banh mi in Ho Chi Minh City generally runs from around 15,000 to 35,000 VND (about US$0.60 to $1.35), depending on the neighbourhood and fillings. Fully vegan premium shops charge more because the sandwiches are larger and the fillings are made in-house. At Bánh Mì XANH, the sandwiches run from 28,000 VND (about US$1.05) for the sweet butter-sugar version to 75,000 VND (about US$2.85) for the big premium one, with the classic mixed sandwich at 59,000 VND (about US$2.25). Dollar figures use around 26,000 VND per USD (check current rate).

Frequently asked questions

Is there vegan banh mi open late at night in Saigon?

Yes. All five Bánh Mì XANH shops are open 24/7, including the one on Đề Thám in the Bùi Viện backpacker area. Most vegetarian restaurants close in the evening, so these are the main late-night option.

Which vegan banh mi shop is closest to Bến Thành Market?

The Bánh Mì XANH shop at 38 Lê Thị Riêng in Bến Thành ward is a short walk from the market. The small grab-and-go counter at 2B Trần Hưng Đạo is also in the same ward.

Do I still say District 1 to a taxi driver?

Yes, everyone still understands it. Officially the districts were abolished on 1 July 2025 and replaced by redrawn wards, but street address and street name are what ride-hailing apps need.

Can I get vegan banh mi delivered to my hotel?

Usually. Bánh Mì XANH takes orders online and calls back to confirm, and general delivery apps list vegetarian shops. Give the hotel name and room number, and meet the rider at reception.

Are pagoda vegetarian stalls fully vegan?

Often but not always. Buddhist vegetarian food excludes meat and fish, but eggs or milk may appear, and some mock meats contain egg white. Ask with the phrase thuần chay.
